همینگوی میخوانم. این تربیتی است که از نوجوانی برداشتهام. همینگوی مغرور و زیبا با درخششی فلزی. و درست وقتی او، جوان بیست و پنجسالهی سودایی به ارنست والش میگوید؛ «نویسندهای مثل داستایفسکی نمیشناسم که تا این اندازه بد بنویسد اما آدم را تا اعماق تکان بدهد»، از شبح آدمهای بههمچپیده میفهمم که آنها به شرق میروند. یک چیزی در آنها هست که به آدمهای غرب نمیخورد و این ناگهان به من الهام میشود. بله. قطار در ایستگاه پیروزی میایستد. من با دستهی شیاطین خسته و مفلوک همسفر بودهام. در آنها قلب مهربانی نبوده است که روی شانهام بزند و بگوید این قطار به شرق میرود و آنجا میدانی که سقف آسمان کمرشکن و کوتاهتر است. یک دم دیگر من از قطار بیرون پریدهام و سر در کتاب جادویی همینگوی در قطار دیگری نشستهام. قطاری که به غرب میرود. این را از کفشها و دستهایشان میفهمم. خسته و داغان و «داغ مرگ خورده» تهران را به غرب میبرند و تا کورهشهرهای کرج ادامه میدهند. جز همان کتاب «ناقوسها برای که مینوازند؟» که برای یکبار خواندن نوشته است، باقی کتابهایش را مثل یک مومن یا یک رفیق بیشیله پیله میخوانم. کتابهای مقدس من، همسفران هوشیار من در قطار و هواپیما، پرایدهای نفسبریده. با او بهاندازهی چند ایستگاه از فکر مرگ در امان ماندهام. همنفس با کارگرانی که به اشباح میمانند. با کفشهای لگدخورده، کیفهای خالی، حواسهای تیز مخصوص دریدن. یکی از آنها روی شانهام میزند میگوید به شما نمیآید از آدمهای شرق باشید. جوابش را بی هیچ تعارف و دلواپسی میدهم. نه هرگز. من همیشه آدم حواشی غربام. اما این قطار به شرق میرود. چنین نیرنگی در من نمیگیرد. نه. این قطار به غرب میرود. به مسافرانش نگاه کن. حالا باید در ایستگاه چیتگر باشیم، مگر اینکه شب بیاندازه سیاه، و دهانها بیاندازه بسته باشد. مرد دهان میبندد. دیگر در چشمهایش نشانی از دلسوزی نیست. کیف دستش را سفت چسبیده و یک دم دیگر رفته است. او حالا از قطار پیاده شده. آزردهخاطر، دلشکسته، در ایستگاهی که تابلوهایش مخفی است. ایستگاهی در میانه، در گمشدگی غربها و شرقها. در ظلماتی شگرف و مسلط.
